What the Hell is a Psoas Muscle?

Rob Bekius PsoasA few weeks ago I was blogging about how masterfully I had beaten and overcome all the injuries that old age has thrown at me. Back to training hard without a care in the world and boom, my back gives out. Now I am blogging about my stupid back and how it completely seized up on me. I played hockey one Sunday and the next morning I could barely move…it was like I’d aged 50 years over night! It was only after skillfully rocking back and forth that I was able to get out of bed and slowly begin to stand upright like a human being. What the hell had happened to my back? Fuck me I thought, another injury that will sideline my training again.

My hip flexor had been hurting for a couple months but I figured it would just go away after while. Yes, in my world if you wish hard enough and ignore warning signs, sometimes things just go away on their own. Well, it did not go away and my left hip flexor was starting to cause me some significant pain whenever I exercised; especially after hockey where this area is pushed really hard. (Well, as hard as it can be pushed in beer league hockey). Ultimately, it finally gave out after that last Sunday game.

Rather than go straight to a doctor for some medical expertise, I decided once again if I wait a couple days it should just go away on its own. Not surprisingly, it did not go away and off to the chiropractor I went. (Here’s a plug for Jolene at Sherwood Chiropractic as she is awesome and fixes my body whenever it goes into paralysis). I explained to Jolene my current medical situation, gave some details on my daily activities and right away I am diagnosed… “Rob, it’s your Psoas muscle”.

“What the hell is a psoas muscle?”

Here is what I’ve learned. The Psoas is the primary connector muscle between the torso and the leg. It affects posture, helps stabilize the spine, and, if out of balance, can be a significant contributor to low back and pelvic pain. The psoas is the biggest and strongest player in a group of muscles call the hip flexors. The hip flexors can become short and tight if you spend most of your waking hours sitting. Oh yeah, did I mention, I sit all day at a desk and also rarely stretch. (All the times Jen has asked me to go to Yoga and I declined…sigh) Hmmm…now things are starting to make sense. Why do I always learn these things after a major body failure and not before to prevent them? I’ll tell you why, because I’m a guy and guys like to give ‘er shit until somethings breaks.

So how does this all end you’re wondering? Three chiropractic adjustments, one deep psoas massage, four days off from any activity, some mild complaining, some stretching and things are pretty much back to normal. At least Chris thinks so as he is pushing me harder than ever at our weekly training sessions!

What did I learn? That no matter how boring and unexciting I find stretching … I have to start doing it if I want to keep walking upright. Odds are if you sit at a desk all day like me you may have experienced this too. Now you know better…
