TRAINING DAYS: Ramping up the 2014 season!

photo-4With our next Goal Setting evening coming up and the sun finally out I felt like there was no time like the present to pick up on my training blog for this years races. Last year I had my sights set on my very first Ironman and found solace and accountability in keeping track and updating everyone on my progress, struggles and eventual victory!

I had quite a few comments from other athletes in regards to my blogs last year and I have realized that as much as they helped me, they helped others going through the same turmoil, we all have to start somewhere and it helps knowing you are not alone in a sport like triathlon, because sometimes it can feel just like that. It has already been a busy winter of training, and with a new team and new goals on the table I figured its time to pick up where I left off.

First things first! GOALS! These babies are not meant to be kept floating around in your head, they are meant to be shouted from rooftops- why? because as scary as that is, it means that they are now REAL! And that, while scary, is also empowering. So here we go- My goal for the 2014 race season: “I will qualify for the 70.3 (Half Ironman) World Championships by September 2014”. And now just let me wipe my all of a sudden sweaty palms. Whew… Okay moving on.

How am I going to do this? Well for starters, Blitz now has a triathlon team! This has been an amazing addition to Blitz, for selfish reasons on my part but also because of the community and members already on the team. With our coach Steph Neufeld leading us through week after week of challenges and training, I am already feeling a lot stronger than I have ever before going in to a race season. My schedule being what it is still requires me to do most of my training on my own, but the moments I do get with the team are amazing, there are some seriously awesome athletes on our team already and I feel pretty blessed to be training alongside them.

Next up, I will need to race! I have 3 main races lined up with the option of an extra one late in the season. You will be hearing all about these as they come down the pipe. 1st up! June 15th- The Subaru Victoria Half Ironman, after that the Great White North Triathlon July 6th in Stony Plain, AB. And last but not least the Calgary 70.3 Half Ironman July 27th. Victoria and Calgary are both qualifying races. My focus right now being Victoria as I’d like to qualify sooner rather than later.

It’s a different thought process than just trying to finish the race that’s for sure, and that’s what makes it interesting as I keep pushing the envelope with my training. One crazy goal at a time.
