7 Tips if You Hate Exercise.

Let’s face it, not all of us like to exercise!  Actually about 55% of people in North America did not move enough in 2011.  Not all of us like stepping on a treadmill, or walking into a smelly gym, or jumping into a cold pool.  New comer’s to Blitz Conditioning would typically look at Brett‘s picture and ask me:

“You’re not going to make me do that are you???”

I usually answer: “No” with a grin, “at least not right away…”

Comedy aside, the top 7 reasons why people don’t exercise are:

  • Intimidation
  • Lack of Time
  • Negative Image of Exercise
  • Slow Results
  • Money
  • Lack of Support
  • Motivation

Here are the top 7 tips to counteract the reasons above:

  • Make it Fun!  There are so many options right now for exercise: walking your dog, group fitness classes, personal training, intramural sports, running, climbing, hiking, etc…  Shop around and find something you like doing.
  • Exercise in the morning: statistics show that people will stick to a fitness regimen more often if they workout in the morning.
  • Get a partner: Personally, I can’t workout without a partner anymore!  The accountability and intensity are the greatest advantages of having a partner in crime.
  • Schedule your workouts: busy work and home schedule?  Book in your workouts and protect it like any other meeting you have.  Schedule things around it and tell people it’s a priority so it’s respected as such!
  • Reward yourself: Buy something after you have committed to and accomplished a specific fitness goal.  Don’t use food as the reward.
  • Stop “All or Nothing”: stop the internal dialogue of: “if I don’t change everything in one go, I won’t commit”.  Make small changes once a week and see the results multiply over time.
  • Set Goals: Make them realistic and measurable but don’t make them focused on weight alone.

Just remember:

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Confucius

Let’s make it a goal to go from hating exercise to tolerating it; and the liking to exercise will creep up on you!
