Motivation needs Action.

I googled ‘motivational workout quotes’  the other day and these were the related searches that came up:

“Should I work out today”

“I need motivation to work out”

“Help I need motivation to start exercising”

I found this really interesting that someone would be looking to google to find the answers to the question of whether or not they should work out. The answer is obviously YES- You don’t need to look very far to see the reasons why you should work out. The effects of an active lifestyle are constantly being covered on local news as countries are attempting to tackle obesity epidemics. Yet time and time again on social media sites like pinterest I see motivational work out posters with the description at the bottom ‘one day’ or ‘I need to start working out’. There seems to be a large gap for a lot of people between knowing the benefits of working out and lacking the motivation to do so.

In other words, people know that they should be exercising, its just a matter of actually doing it. What people are looking for, is some form of outside motivation. This, to me, is a fundamental problem in starting an active lifestyle. The key-word being ‘lifestyle’, extrinsic motivation such as posters and quotes can only get you so far. Sure they get you pumped up for a moment, you read a story, or see a poster with a quote and you feel inspired, but then what? You only need to plug in one of those searches above into google to be flooded with a plethora of articles on the benefits of a healthy active lifestyle, as well as tips and tricks on how to start a routine and stick with it.

Too often though, people will read through all of this material and still stay sitting in front of their computer. What is missing in this search is a real willingness inside one self to really take the steps necessary to head out and exercise. What is at the heart of a true lifestyle change towards active living is the will inside oneself to get up and get moving. The internal motivation and drive to really put in the time and effort to get the results that you need, that you deserve. This is referred to as intrinsic motivation. And is key to really changing ones lifestyle, starting a routine and sticking with it.

Sure extrinsic motivational pieces play a part in keeping ourselves inspired and excited about exercising. But at the end of the day, unless put into action they are just words, or pictures. Bottom line, no one can make the changes for you that you need to make, sure, you can be inspired by an outside influence, but if you choose not to do anything about it, that is up to you. Whether or not you decide to eat healthy and maintain an active lifestyle comes down to taking all of those articles, and sayings and translating them into an internal drive to be best version of yourself that you can be.

The facts are numerous, the benefits are priceless to leading a healthy active lifestyle. You have a body that won’t take care of itself. Maybe it comes down to, when we are looking for motivation, instead of looking to the internet to ask ‘why should I’? We take a look in the mirror and say ‘why not’, take control of your life and be motivated first and foremost by the fact that you have a body that will take care of you if you take care of it. Then get out there and start making the changes that will help you live your best life possible. That should be motivation in and of itself. Forget google, you’ve got this!
