How to Attain Success.

I’ve been somewhat obsessed with success stories.  I love reading stories about how people have struggled through remarkably difficult situations and managed no only to survive but to thrive in them.  It’s these stories that colour our collective history that serve as platforms that inspire us to keep going and trudge through the struggles that we experience in order to see a vision complete.  There are resounding points to attaining success that keep on popping up and I thought it would be great to share some of them that I’ve learned from all the stories I’ve read over the past while:

1) Humility: Pride is the fall of man.  Success happens when people listen to others and understand that we all have particular qualities that makes each person unique and an expert at something.  We may be good at something but there’s always room to learn more from others.

2) There is no autopilot, it’s not going to be easy: there is no magic pill, no free ride or a universal system to success except to fight for what’s right and to spend a whole lot of effort and sweat doing it.  There is no room for laziness and lack of passion when attaining success.

3) Go Against the Crowd:  popularity is and social norms are created to box people in. Success doesn’t happen when we follow everyone else, it happens when we chose to do what’s harder in life.

4) First to arrive, last to leave: be the one who sticks it out till the very end and shows up early the next morning to start it all over again.  Most people aren’t successful because they aren’t willing to put in the time required to attain it.

5) No Back Up Plans: If you want to be successful, there is no back up plan.  Fighting for what’s right and for a vision requires clarity, back ups are exit strategies that cloud the vision.  We become successful when we commit everything we have to seeing something fulfilled.

6) Give before you receive, and never expect to receive anything back:  Far too many people give love with strings attached.  Helping others is like throwing a pebble in still waters, the waves ripple outwards and not back in.

7) Gratitude: be thankful for every opportunity and person we meet in life.  Whether it’s a positive or negative interaction, they all force us to change and become different.  We are who we currently are because of the composition of situations we’ve been through and people we’ve met.  This isn’t a one person show and certainly when success is attained it’s because we’ve had help along the way.

8) Be Curious: discovery beings with a question. Success is answering those questions with the purpose of seeing a result.  Life is a series of questions in which we are tasked to find answers to.

9) Focus on the message and not the messenger:  we get into arguments about petty things far too often because the message was mis-interpreted.  Then we get lost in a cloud of conflict even though the message is intended to be pure.  When we focus on the message we learn what change is necessary in order to achieve a vision.

10) Argue with yourself and when it’s done quiet the inner voice:  be your own worst enemy when it comes to the hard decisions in life.  Have inner debates so that when you make a final decision you can do it with certainty and confidence.  When the decision has been made, quiet the inner voice and stop arguing with yourself about whether or not it was the correct choice.
