Goal Coaching: So… where are you going to be in 10 years?

img2The Blitz team has been undergoing some amazing and intensive goal coaching sessions led by Amy.  We’re asking our team members questions like:

  • Where are you in 10 years?
  • Who are you with?
  • How do you feel?
  • What’s your health like?
  • What are you doing?

From these questions we create a plan to realize these goals in 5 year increments.  We go back 5 years from the 10 year goal and create a plan.  Then go back a year from now to create action oriented goals that allow us to realize the 10 year vision.  We share these visions with each other in order to support each other in our goals but also to ensure that the companies goals are aligned with the people in our team.  Ultimately we may not arrive at the exact endpoint that we envisioned in each of our lives, but we find that it benefits us as individuals and as a group to step forward with purpose.

I will be the first to admit the following: I’ve never done this before and it scared the living daylights out of me to plan this far in advance.  I have always been content with my ability to adapt to different situations and learn from them to become who I am and who I will be.  Activities that force me to sit down and visualize myself as a bearded old man holding a cane talking about the good old days just never crossed my mind. Ok… in 10 years I’m turning 39 and I won’t be that old, but you get the point.  It scared me to have to write down a vision that I saw of myself in 10 years time.  To create a concrete goal in life.  It scared me to see what I might become in 10 years.  I’m passionate about developing communities, relationships and fitness but I’ve always placed these values ahead of a vision that I sought in my own life.

304695,xcitefun-sports-motivation-2I dove into the goal coaching session with open arms and in a non-judgmental way.  As I sat in the office with my eyes closed, clearing my mind, and envisioning myself 10 years from now, I became calm, and at ease.  I started to realize that planning in advance gave clarity to my path.  The goal of the practise is not to create a concrete end goal, but to find the right path to journey on and guide decisions that need to be made.  I realized that what goal coaching allowed me to do is simplify life even further by stepping out of reality and focusing on a vision.  In my future I didn’t see a Lamborghini or a giant mansion.  I didn’t see myself wearing gold chains and a giant fur coat walking around with a cane and “swagger”- I just gave myself chills and nausea writing that. What I saw was simplicity.  Family, friends, health, and happiness surfaced in my mind.  These values that I was taught early on in my life still reside like as intense as my heart beats.  When I distilled down everything that I do, my goal in life is still to strive for fulfillment in the context of relationships.  Fitness and health have become an essential part of my life because it both creates relationships with others and serves to ensure that my quality of life is high so I can experience situations to their fullest potential.

So I now have the task of planning backwards from 10 years in order to fulfill the vision that I saw.  The goal is to ensure that every day I take one action that brings me closer to the vision.  The vision creates purpose which in turn creates discipline in life.
