A Fit Geek’s Year in Review

Hedgehodge After

'The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.' - Socrates Hello again friends and fellow fit nerds! Can you believe more than a year's passed since I embarked on my fit quest and changed my life for the better? I sure haven't! I wanted to take some time to share my progress and lay out what I plan to do in my 2014-2015 season of nerd fitness with you. So let's get started shall we? Last year, I signed up for Blitz … [Read more...]

Blitzing Tijuana: A Retrospective

#KnowlegeBomb

It's been a few weeks since the gang Blitzed Tijuana. The tans have faded, the sunburns have peeled and all that's left is a sense of pride and humility at what we've accomplished. We managed to build a house for a family in three-in-a-half days and if you haven't already, here's the video that tells our tale: When the customs officer let me back into Canada, I should've '"declared" that it was the BEST TRIP EVER!!! I would like to share a couple takeaways from my experience … [Read more...]

Not Starting from the Bottom Anymore

Steve meet's his nerd hero Mark Fraunfelder at an event hosted by the Edmonton Public Library

The highs and lows of a fit quest can be quite interesting. At one point you're flying high and you think that nothing can stop you, and then you hit an emotional wall that makes you feel like packing up your fancy tri-colour shoes. I've always thought of myself as a pretty positive guy so whenever I hit an emotional speed bump, I dug my head in the sand, felt ashamed and thought that I have to start all over again.  I felt like I have no choice but to start back a level one and pick a brand … [Read more...]

Steve’s Run Quest and Push-Update

Such form,

Hey Fellow Fit Nerds! Steve here with an update on how my push-up and run quests are coming along. First, let's talk push-ups. I've been doing some work with Chris, and on my own, to improve my overall strength and I am seeing results! I started with barely being able to push myself up without the assistance of my knees and here's a video taken last week that shows how far I've come along: >>>Steve's Push-Update #1 Whoo! I'm pretty pumped that I was able to do nine (ish) … [Read more...]

My Run Quest – Part One

Run Bib

In 2012, I ran Melissa's with Father after training for months. What I submit to you are my thoughts during the race. On your marks…get set… GO! Kilometre #1 Away we go! Man this is easy. I can run a kilometre in my sleep. I wonder if I should listen to that gal who told me to watch for vomit patches while running up a mountain??? Kilometre #2 I feel awesome. Banff is awesome… Life is awesome… These running signs are awesome… Heck, even the word awesome is awesome. Note to … [Read more...]

Let’s SPRING Into Action!

max

Now that Spring hath sprung who's ready to kick it up a notch? I SURE AM! Throughout winter, I trudged through literal and metaphorical snow and had a heck of a time getting motivated. I was like a bear. I slept, gained weight to survive and I kind of looked like this: Well now this big sexy bear has woke up from hibernation and it's time to kick some butt. Looking for some motivation? Here are Four Ways to a Fitness-Filled Spring Set a seasonal goal - Nothing can keep you … [Read more...]

The Little Things

Brittany Kustra Blitz Conditioning Edmonton

When I started working out with Chris, he asked me what my goals are. I have some lofty, long-term ones (that I’m not quite ready to share -- yet), but there was one specific goal I had in mind: make it through a Blitz Edmonton HIIT class without going on my knees for pushups (that includes regular pushups, army pushups, tricep pushups…oh man, Blitz makes us do a ton of different kinds of pushups). Well last Thursday at Amy’s 6 AM HIIT class, I accomplished that – almost. I did modify one set … [Read more...]

Injuries: Respect them, heal them, and then Crush your Goals!

Focusing and being consistent with your rehabilitation is paramount for recovery.

Happy New Year! We've all been there: had an injury of some sort - whether it was an ankle sprain, shin splints, muscle strain, etc. It's never fun to be injured, and as a personal trainer my mission is to help people learn to move properly to minimize their risk of injury. That being said, when we are constantly pushing our bodies to new limits and taking on more intense workouts and movements, the potential for injury increases. As our bodies become capable of more and more (which is … [Read more...]

Goal Setting Workshop

IMG_9783

I am great at saying I’m going to lose X amount of weight by this time, or I’m going to do _______ next week/month/year and not doing it, I am also great at setting some goals and achieving them. So why is it that some goals/dreams/ideas you achieve and some you don’t? Over the last year or so I have fallen in love with Blitz and the community that has been built. We regularly talk about goals and I've been asked what my goals are but each time this has happened it has been a huge kick in the … [Read more...]
